Concept Of Primary And Secondary Storage

Storage units in a computer system can be divided into:
a) Primary storage unit.
b) Secondary storage unit.
Primary storage can also be referred to as the internal or main memory of a computer system. Due to cost factor main memory is resistricted up to certain storage capacity.

Secondary storage is also known as the auxiliary or backup storage, serves the purpose of additional memory of the computer system at a much lower cost.
Secondary storage unit may be further subdivided into:
a) On-line direct access storage unit.
b) Off-line sequential access storage unit.
