Communicates with the input/output devices. Input devices transfer all input information (instruction/data) and the output devices receive all output information through this register.
The Instruction Register holds the current instruction under execution. Separates the operation part and the address part of the instruction. Address part is sent to MAR and the operation part to the control section.
